The Gardai undertook a major traffic operation throughout Thursday and Friday of last week.
Assistant Commissioner John Twomey, Garda National Traffic Bureau described the figures as “disappointing”.
“Disappointingly… over the two days, 1191 drivers were found holding a mobile phone whilst driving, effectively causing a risk for you and I on the road.”
“This is approximately six times more than is normally detected.”
“An Garda Síochána will continue to target this “lifesaver” offence, which will now be strengthened by additional legislation which is being introduced on the 1st May 2014 in relation to reading or sending a text from a mobile phone.”
In 2013, there were over 28,000 people detected holding a mobile phone whilst driving, the second highest offence detected nationally.
Drivers caught texting and using mobiles or smartphones, even if they are on a hands-free kit, will be given a mandatory court summons and a fine of up to €1,000 instead of just penalty points under new road safety regulation
