The Minister for Justice commenting on the Legal Services (Regulation) Bill
said that the ethos of the Bar Council, which regulates the Law Library, was to resist change and it had done this successfully for well over 100 years. He now wants to make restrictive practices illegal.
Hughes Murphy greatly encourage this change.
There is no doubt that the winds of change are blowing and we welcome the opportunity of representing our clients in the Courts, Ombudsman and Disciplinary Inquiries.
The late Tom Murphy personally took on the challenge of representing members of the Garda rank at the Donegal Tribunal and had many a stirring cross examination of witnesses and, on one memorable occasion, so confronted one of the McBrearty family, that the witness volunteered, and made to take off his jacket, and sort the matter in question outside “mano et mano”.
Having such a role model it is no surprise that Liz Hughes has equally represented many members personally both in the High Court and elsewhere. As Liz points out many of the cases quoted as precedent involved the office over the past 30 years.
The firm is contacted regularly by solicitors seeking advice on issues relating to discipline and appeals and Garda Compensation. It was a practise started by Tom and he saw it as part of the legal service benefiting the members as a group.
